altBhagyalakshmi scheme was launched during 2006-07 with an objective to promote the birth of girl children in below poverty line  families and to raise the status of the girl child in the family in particular and society in general. Financial assistance is provided to the girl child through her mother/father or natural guardian subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions.

• All girl children born in BPL families after 31.3.06 are eligible  to be  enrolled as a beneficiary under the scheme.   Enrollment  is allowed upto one  year of the birth of child  on  production of birth certificate.
• The benefits of the scheme are restricted to 2 girl children of a BPL family.  The father, mother or guardian should have undergone terminal family planning methods and the total number of children should not exceed 3.
• After enrollment and due verification by the department, an  amount of    Rs. 10,000/- will be deposited  with the selected financial institution in the girl child's name.
•  The financial institution will maximise the return on Rs. 10,000/- and the deposit together with the interests accrued  will be made available to the beneficiary on attaining 18 years of age. An amount of Rs. 34,751/- to the first child and Rs. 40,918/-  to the second child enrolled in the same family will be given.
• Interim payments such as  scholarship and insurance benefits will be made available to the beneficiary on continued fulfillment of the eligibility criteria out lined in the scheme.     
• If the girl child falls sick, medical insura nce claims upto a maximum of Rs.25,000/- is provided.
• If a natural death of the insured person takes place, insurance of Rs.42,500/- is given.
• If the insured person dies in an accident, insurance of Rs.1,00,000 will be given to the family.

Eligibility criteria:

•    The birth of the child should be compulsorily registered
•    The child should
a.  be immunized as per the programme of the Health Department
b.  be enrolled in theAnganwadi centre
c.  take admission in a school recognized by the Education Department.
d.  not  to become a child labourer
e.  Not to  marry until the age of 18 years.

The scheme is implemented in collaboration with the  Life Insurance Corporation of India.

The scheme was partially modified  during August 2008 and is applicable to all children born on or after 01/08/2008.

The  modifications  made to the  scheme are as indicated below:
• An amount of Rs. 19,300/- will be deposited with the financial institution in the name of the first girl beneficiary and  Rs. 18,350/- in the name of the second girl beneficiary of the same family. On attainment of 18 years of age, the first girl beneficiary of the family who fulfils the conditions of the scheme will get a maturity amount of Rs. 1,00,097/- and the second girl beneficiary will get Rs. 1,00,052/-.

• The beneficiaries who are  desirous to continue higher education after passing SSLC and have attained 15 years are eligible to pledge the bond and avail loan upto a maximum of Rs. 50,000/-  from recognized banks.

• The scholarships and medical reimbursement benefits have been withdrawn.

From 2006-07 to 2010-11 an amount of Rs.1376.53 Crores has been incurred for distribution of  Bonds to 10,18,189 beneficiaries

During 2011-12, an amount of  Rs.486.14 crores has been released for distribution of Bonds to 2,54,473 beneficiaries
